A daring counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region has resulted in the capture of more than 250 Russian soldiers using advanced technology, including ground robots and explosive-laden armoured vehicles, according to a report by CNN.
The offensive, dubbed “Operation Vivaldi,” marks a significant tactical shift for Ukraine following months of heavy air bombardments and territorial losses.
High-Tech Tactics on the Front Lines
According to details reported by CNN, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps orchestrated the operation by deploying ground robotic systems equipped with heavy weaponry roughly six miles behind enemy lines. Controlled remotely from command centres deep inside Ukrainian territory, these land drones launched surprise attacks on Russian positions from unexpected angles.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces converted Soviet-era armoured personnel carriers into unmanned “Trojan” kamikaze vehicles packed with explosives, driving them directly into Russian fortifications.
A video released by the Third Army Corps and cited by CNN shows dozens of Russian soldiers walking through a forest in a single file to surrender. Captive soldiers in the video described dire conditions, stating they ran out of basic provisions, resorted to eating grass and bark, and drank from puddles before giving up to avoid dying in vain.
CNN noted that while it could not independently verify the video or the total casualty figures, prominent Russian military bloggers have confirmed recent setbacks and expressed frustration over command and supply failures.
A Shift in Territory and Momentum
The operation has helped turn the tide in the eastern theatre after months of slow, steady Russian advances:
-
Territorial Gains: Analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) cited by CNN shows that Russian forces lost more territory (99 square miles) than they captured (67 square miles) in September. Operation Vivaldi accounted for roughly 58 square miles of recaptured land.
-
Ukrainian Estimates: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed even higher gains, stating that 68 square miles had been reclaimed and that 5,000 Russian troops were either killed or wounded since the start of the operation.
-
Strategic Impact: Pro-Kremlin military bloggers admitted that the losses in Donbas will force Russian troops to reorganise logistics and slow their push toward key defence hubs in Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
The Broader Conflict
The tactical success comes amid severe hardship for Ukraine, as continuous Russian aerial strikes have heavily targeted cities, making the past several months among the deadliest for civilians since the 2022 invasion.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently claimed that Moscow could capture the remainder of Donetsk in under two years and argued that Ukrainian resistance is futile. However, military analysts and Western intelligence sources cited in CNN’s reporting indicate that Russia is suffering roughly 40,000 casualties a month. At current rates of progress, analysts estimate it could take Russian forces until 2032 to fully capture the Donbas region, if they are able to do so at all.
