Nigeria 2027 Election: Supreme Court, Atiku vs Tinubu and the Battle for North Central Votes

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is moving from speculation to hard political tests: court rulings, candidate eligibility battles, opposition fragmentation, regional vote strategy and the practical machinery required to win a nationwide election. #Nigeria2027#The2027Race#AtikuVsTinubu#ElectoralAct2026#NorthCentralVotes#NigeriaDecides2027

In this edition of The 2027 Race, Rimamnde Shawulu Kwewum examines the developments reshaping the contest as Nigeria approaches the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.

At the centre is the Supreme Court’s decision restoring Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026 — provisions dealing with political-party membership records and candidate nomination procedures.

What could that ruling mean for party primaries, nomination disputes and future election litigation? And just as importantly, what does it not mean?

The programme also examines the Federal High Court case brought by Atiku Abubakar and the ADC challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eligibility to contest in 2027. The allegations remain before the court and have not been judicially determined, making the distinction between an allegation, an application, a judgment and an appeal essential. Attention then shifts to Seyi Makinde’s APM campaign and its push into North Central Nigeria. Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and the FCT are not one political bloc.

With Peter Obi, Atiku, Makinde and the APC all competing for influence, the real question is not who “owns” North Central, but where each candidate can actually add votes. This episode also asks whether Nigeria’s divided opposition can still cooperate, whether supporters can be transferred from one candidate to another, and whether campaign visibility is being converted into organisation, agents, mobilisation and votes.

Finally, we examine election security: candidate protection, voter safety, INEC deployment and the security of BVAS devices, ballot papers and result materials.

For Nigerians at home and in the diaspora — and for international observers following Africa’s largest democracy — this is a race increasingly defined by law, geography, organisation and voter persuasion.
