Nigeria’s Deadliest Security Week: 15 Troops Killed, Child Murdered After Ransom Paid

Armed groups struck across six states between 18 and 24 October, killing at least 32 confirmed civilians and security personnel and exposing the limits of federal counter-insurgency strategy.

ABUJA, 25 October 2026 — Fifteen Nigerian soldiers and Civilian Joint Task Force members were killed in a single Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambush in Borno State on 18 October, in what analysts describe as one of the deadliest single incidents for Nigerian security forces this year.

The attack near Gamboru Ngala on the Cameroon border began with a landmine detonated beneath a military convoy, followed by coordinated small-arms fire on survivors. The incident occurred on the same day the Nigerian Air Force announced the conclusion of an air campaign claiming 103 ISWAP fighters neutralised across seven strikes in Borno and Adamawa States between 10 and 18 October. The military’s figures have not been independently verified.

The contradiction drew immediate scrutiny from security observers. Announcing strategic degradation while sustaining catastrophic tactical losses in the same 24-hour period, they said, illustrated the limits of air power alone against an adaptive insurgency.

The week’s most harrowing incident came four days later in Jos, Plateau State. Abdullahi Rabi’u, seven years old, was abducted on 22 October while running an errand in the Majema area of Jos North Local Government Area. His family agreed to pay a ₦2.5 million ransom. He was murdered before the payment was processed. His body was found near the family residence. No arrests had been announced at the time of publication.

In Zamfara State, more than 59 armed bandits on motorcycles mounted a three-day siege on Birnin Tudu, Gummi LGA, between 21 and 23 October. Five civilians were killed returning from their farms and approximately 1,000 cattle were stolen. Community vigilantes held the settlement without adequate military backup. The Zamfara State Government has called on Abuja for urgent reinforcement.

Eight kidnap victims — including a reverend father — were rescued in Ohimini LGA, Benue State, following a five-day joint police operation. Two suspects were arrested. Three of the original eleven abductees remain unaccounted for.

Regional events compounded the domestic picture. At least 48 civilians, including children and elderly people, were massacred by Islamic State fighters in the Ménaka region of eastern Mali on 18–19 October, according to a National Transitional Council official who confirmed the toll to the Associated Press. Lakurawa, a JNIM-linked group documented in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States, operates within the same expanding jihadist network.

Nigeria’s minimum documented figures for the week stand at 32 confirmed dead, six or more abducted, and eight rescued.
